It almost sounds pathetic to talk about a new computing area, but we do feel extremely excited about actually living in a time where massive change is take place in the computing world. Today (in 2013) there is a new reality in hardware compared to reality back in the 1980s when databases were developed, which enables us to fundamentally rethink enterprise software.
Two major hardware trends represent this disruptive new computing
- Memory is available in large quantities and has become incredibly cheap.
- Multicore processors provide excessive amounts of compute power.
This development is not a singular event in time, but a process in the evolution of computer systems that SAP decided to bank on. SAP developed a new kind of software that fully leverages the potential of multi-core systems with large memory, in order to deliver competitive enterprise applications for the future. The principal of this new software is in-memory computing.
